Room and MaruAbout "Hanok"

Room and Maru

In a hanok, the Maru connects rooms, expanding limited internal spaces to the outside or allowing external spaces to enter into the interior. Therefore, when appreciating hanok, it is necessary to pay attention to the various ways that the Maru combines with the rooms.

Room and Maru of the Main House

  • Main room

It is the central space of the main house and the daily space of the madam, where most of the life takes place. It is usually located at the innermost part of the house, and outsiders are not allowed to enter. Next to the main room, the kitchen, Maru, storeroom, and the upper floor are connected. In addition, there is an attic door between the master room and the kitchen, leading to the attic above the kitchen.

    Upper floor (small room)

A room that is near the top of the main room that is normally open through windows and doors. It is mainly a space where frame structures such as drawers and chests are placed.

    Main hall

It is a large Maru between the main room and the opposite room. This is the most open space that leads to the courtyard, and large and small events such as weddings and ceremonies are mainly held here.

    Kitchen

It is a cooking space. There is a stove that supplies heat to Ondol, so it is a place where heating and cooking happen.

  • Opposite room

Arranged facing the main room with the main hall in between. In front of the opposite room, an upper floor is often built.
